This National Adoption Week (Monday 21 to Sunday 27 October), we’re showcasing adoption journeys of all kinds, and the important people who are there along the way, as part of this year’s You Can Adopt campaign, The Journey. The campaign raises awareness of modern adoption and showcases the diversity of adoptive families today, showing that the journey to a family is not always a traditional one.

National adoption drive launches amid rise in number of children needing a forever home
With the cost of living hitting families, experts warn that prospective adopters may be holding back waiting for the ‘perfect time’ or circumstances. But for a child needing a permanent home, the perfect time is now. The campaign is supported by BBC’s ‘The Traitors’ contestant Miles Asteri, adoptive father of two, who described adoption as ‘the adventure of a lifetime’.
New birth family services mapping project launched
The Family Rights Group has recently launched a groundbreaking project to map support services for birth families in England. These services include advice, peer-to-peer support, and therapeutic assistance.

Adoption services for Cornwall Council and the Isles of Scilly join the Regional Adoption Agency, Adopt South West, from Monday 1 April 2024.
LGBTQ+ people from ethnically diverse backgrounds called to adopt
Social workers can struggle to find appropriate adoption and fostering placements for looked after children from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Too few approved adopters and foster carers share the same culture and heritage as these children.
Change to the adoption and special guardian support fund (ASGSF)
A new name change for the Adoption and special guardianship support fund (ASGSF). The ASGSF model is based on the existing statutory framework for the assessment of adoption support or SGO support needs and the provision of support services.
