Life story drop-in sessions
At Adopt South West, we want to ensure that as many parents as possible benefit from our life story work clinic/drop-in sessions, which are offered every month. We’ve received feedback from parents suggesting that they might be more inclined to attend if they knew more about these sessions. We hope this information helps.
What to expect
Our sessions run for one hour and provide parents with uninterrupted, dedicated consultation on life story work with a professional who has significant experience in this area. Rather than seeing it as work, think of it as learning how to share your child’s story with them. This supports their development, identity, and well-being while alleviating some of the natural stress and anxiety that comes with this part of your family’s journey.
How we help
During the one-to-one sessions, you’ll receive ideas on how to introduce your child’s story, how to explain and share it with them, and how to use children’s books about adoption and other resources. These sessions will help alleviate your anxieties and fears about saying the ‘wrong thing’ and help you explore and understand your own feelings. This will allow you to meet your child’s needs more confidently by having these vital conversations and interactions. Life story activities are crucial in helping your child understand their story and lived experiences, as well as underpinning their identity and where they see themselves in the world.
Personalised support
Our hour-long, one-to-one sessions are relaxed and informal but tailored to meet your family’s needs. They are not group sessions, so you can feel comfortable and confident expressing your anxieties and concerns in a non-judgemental and confidential space with an experienced professional, without disruptions or distractions.
