I am adopted

Children and young people

The guides below are for children and young people who are adopted or are going through adoption, and want to know more about the process.

If you would like to meet other children and young people who are adopted, or if you would like to talk individually about being adopted, we run activity days for younger children and for teenagers where you can have fun in the company of other young people who have shared some of your experiences.

A group of teenagers who are adopted also meet regularly to plan activity days, events and to offer consultation and feedback to the adoption service.

We work in partnership with Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Plymouth, Somerset, and Torbay local authorities to produce these guides.

Supporting you

A member of our Adoption Support Team can spend time with you.

One of Family Practitioners supported a young person. Showing them that they are important had a powerful impact on how they see themselves. Their adoptive mum has given us permission to share her feedback:

Thank you for coming to visit and for spending a bit of time getting to know Sammy. Having a conversation with you when you came to visit has improved Sammy’s confidence – having someone not in the family talking with her about her feelings has made her feel validated. Since your visit she has been proud of herself as an individual in a unique situation.

Names have been changed for privacy.
