Adoptive adults
We provide a service to adult adoptee’s (18+) who want to know more about their early life history that led to adoption and access their adoption records. We can also provide advice and signposting for those wanting to trace birth relatives.

How It Works
We understand this can be a significant and emotional step, and we’re here to support you.
Locating your records: We will use the information you’ve provided to begin our searches for your adoption records and will contact you if we need anything further. Once located, the records will be checked before we confirm we have found them.
If you were adopted before 30 December 2005 and do not have your original birth certificate, we recommend requesting it from the General Register Office. They will send the details to us, and we will share them with you.
- Online: gov.uk/adoption-records (the form you need to complete is called Access to Birth Certificate Information Before Adoption)
- Write to: General Register Office, Adoptions Section Room C202, Smedley Hydro, Trafalgar Road Southport PR8 2HH
- Telephone: 0300 123 1837 and press option 8
The initial consultation: (sometimes called “Birth Record Counselling”) is a supportive meeting, usually in person. We will verify your ID, explain the process, answer your questions, and gather information that will help us prepare your records. If you already applied for and received your original birth certificate through us, you may not need another consultation.
Sharing meeting: After the consultation, a social worker will prepare your records. Once prepared, we will arrange a meeting to share the records with you.
During the sharing meeting, we will go through the documents at your pace. This sometimes takes more than one visit, or you may prefer to review them independently.
Your social worker will also offer guidance on any next steps, including support around potential contact with birth family.
