Relationships In Good Hands Trial (RIGHT)

Relationships In Good Hands Trial (RIGHT), which is exploring the :

“Clinical and cost effectiveness of Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) for abused and neglected young children with maltreatment-associated problems and their parents.”

The RIGHT trial is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) – the research arm of the NHS.

Do you know of adopters who could take part in the Relationships In Good Hands Trial (RIGHT)?

Unfortunately, the trail does not include our region but if you know of adopters in any of these regions, they can take part in the trial:

  • North/South Lanarkshire
  • Oxfordshire
  • Leicestershire
  • South Wales
  • Birmingham
  • Nottingham
  • South West Yorkshire
  • East Midlands
  • Bedford
  • Hertfordshire
  • Central Bedford
  • SLAM NHS Trust

This trial aims to provide crucial evidence that DDP is effective in supporting adopted children. It would be the first time we would have evidence which would meet the NHS National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) gold standard for research, of involving a randomised controlled trial (RCT), for a therapy provided by the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF). Such evidence will be vital for future spending review discussions with Ministers.

But the trial needs to recruit more families to make it statistically significant and to allow them to draw robust conclusions about the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of DDP.  In May, the NIHR granted them a one-year extension to the trial to give them enough time to recruit enough families.

So far, they have recruited 140 families (60% of requirement) but they need 50 more families to be recruited.

The criteria is:

  • children aged 5-12
  • adopted, Special Guardianship Order, or in a permanent foster placement (but not kinship care or a kinship SGO)
  • with difficulties as a result of abuse and neglect in early life
